ASI
to recommend Dholavira for world heritage site status
Vadodara,
Jan 06: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to
recommend Dholavira, one of the major Harappan sites in west Gujarat,
for nomination as a world heritage site by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Talking
to reporters here, ASI Director B R Mani today said, like the
famous `Champaner-Pavagadh`, the ASI would like to promote and
have the Dholavira sites in the world heritage list.
Last
year, Champaner-Pavagadh, the buried medieval capital city of
Gujarat, was awarded the status of a world heritage site by the
UNESCO following an active campaign launched by the heritage trust,
a Vadodara-based NGO.
Dholavira,
a buried town of the 5,000-year-old Harappan civilisation, was
famous for its citadel, well planned water system and longest
Harappan inscription.
