ASI
to digitise stone inscriptions
Tiruchirappalli
(PTI): the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) would
convert all stone inscriptions found across the country into digital
format.
"We
have a rich collection of inscriptions and estampages (copies
of
inscriptions) and it is important to preserve them for the benefit
of future
generations," S V Venkatesiah, Director-in-Charge of the
Epigraphy, ASI,
told reporters here.
The
matter has been taken by government at the highest level and epigraphy
division of ASI would carry out the digitisation using latest
technology, he
said after inaugurating a photo exhibition of inscriptions on
Thursday.
T
Chandrakumar, Department of Sculpture of the Tamil University
said
inscriptions themselves offered good scope for research.
