professor participates in excavations at Gonur Depe
The archaeologist
from the German Archaeological Institute, Professor Nikolaus Boroffka
participated for the first time in the spring season of the archaeological
excavations in the territory of Mary province of Turkmenistan.
As the scientist told "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper,
starting this year the Eurasian division of the German Archaeological
Institute is participating in the study of Gonur-Depe settlement.
According
to the professor, together with Turkmen colleagues he managed to
dig out a large pottery kiln, a brick staircase, several multi-room
buildings, which, apparently, were used for rituals associated with
the cult of fire. Among the finds there are also a lot of pottery
vessels, large numbers of seals, amulets made of bronze or other
metals, some fine terra-cotta figurines of goddesses and figures
of various animals, as well as beads, needles and other items.
