Mumbai, January 4: INDIA was never invaded by Aryans according to
all archeological and anthropological evidence, said French scholar
Michel Danino while addressing the media on Friday on the subject
`Aryan invasion - Myth and Reality.' Talking of the politicisation
of the subject of Aryan invasion, Danino spoke of the need to introduce
objectivity in text books. ``Whether the Indus valley civilisation
was Vedic or not is debatable, but there is no doubt that the Aryans
never invaded India, a fact pointed out by all kinds of evidence,''
said Danino. He added that even if chapters on Aryan invasion were
not erased from history text books, the fact that there exist schools
of thought that think differently must be introduced to young minds.
Danino gave instances where political groups used this theory to
further their motives. ``The north-south
divide in India is completely based on the Aryan-Dravidian divide,
with Dravidians claiming to be the original inhabitants of the country.
Also, the dalit and tribal leaders use this invasion theory to force
their identity as original inhabitants,'' Danino pointed out. Dr
Kalyanaraman, an expert on the River Saraswati, also present at
the conference, said Karnataka had already introduced this viewpoint
in its Class VIII Social Science text book, which was a very encouraging
sign. The conference had been organised by The
Education Society, Ambernath, which is holding a state level seminar
for teachers and professors of history on January 5 and 6 in its
campus. About 50 colleges and over 100 schools are expected to participate.
Dr S N Navalgundkar, former Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Pune,
will be the chief guest while Dr A R Kulkarni, former director,
ICHR, New Delhi, will chair the session for college teachers. A
special exhibition will also display historical exhibits from January
5 to 9.
