AGRICULTURE IN THE SANGAMAGE
Dr. (Mrs.) V. Balambal
Agriculture
was the main occupation of the Sangam people. The interesting land divisions
Kurinji (Hilly tracks), Mullai (Pastoral lands), Marudam (Agricultural
lands), Neidal (Coastal lands) and Palai (dry lands) and the respective
occupations of the people of these areas had something to do with agriculture.
In this paper
an attempt has been made to trace the nature of agriculture in the Sangam
age, crops cultivated, irrigational facilities, the relation between the
cultivator and the owner, problems and prospects of the agriculturists,
their status in the society, the role of women in agriculture, and contribution
of the rulers to agriculture.
