AGRICULTURE IN ANCIENT INDIA AS
IN PANINI

Varta of Kautilya as mentioned
in the famous stanza was formed with reference to the Vartika of Katyayana.
This varta being the main basis or means of rural livelihood was verily
synonymous with krsi i.e., agriculture. Krsi could be traced to the root
meaning to till or plough.
When Amara refers to agriculture
as one is surprised to have a peep in the veritable nature of agricultural
profession bordering on untruth or cheating. Naturally he emphatically
supports the dual nature of business by saying Amar 2.9.3.
One is further astounded to
find the same view adopted by Sankara in his as preface to his distinguished
gloss on of Vyasa .
Thus it is crystal clear that
Paninian grammar helps one draw a reliable picture based on the agricultural
and allied vocables depicting all the possible hues of agricultural science
as developed in Ancient India.
